Potato Pottery x Club Betty & Babies: A Cozy Birthday Plate Painting Workshop for New Parents in London

At Potato Art Studio, one of the things we love most is seeing how creativity can bring people together in different ways. Recently, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Club Betty & Babies for a special birthday plate painting workshop designed for mums on maternity leave, and honestly, it became one of the warmest events we’ve hosted so far.

The collaboration first started when Kelly, one of the founders of Club Betty & Babies, reached out to us about creating a more baby-friendly creative workshop experience for new parents.

Club Betty & Babies was created by Kelly and Steph as a creative community for new parents, a space where mums on maternity leave can stay creative, meet new people, and enjoy activities together with their babies.

We immediately loved the idea.

At Potato Pottery, we always want our space to feel welcoming and flexible for different communities, so we were very happy to open the studio exclusively for the group on a weekday morning. To help make the environment more baby-friendly, we moved tables around the studio while Kelly brought yoga mats for the babies to crawl and play on comfortably.

The workshop itself was part of Club Betty’s “Birthday Art Series”, where parents could create personalised keepsakes inspired by birthdays and family memories. Together, we explored pottery ideas and suggested birthday-themed handprint plates as one of the main activities.

Guests could choose between two pottery pieces:

  • A smaller coupe plate, perfect for petite and adorable display designs

  • A larger breakfast plate, which many mums decorated with birthday cakes, candles, colourful birthday details, and their babies’ handprints

One of the loveliest things about the event was seeing how different every design became. Some parents created soft pastel birthday themes, while others added playful illustrations and colourful handprint details. Our team worked closely with everyone throughout the session, helping them bring their ideas to life.

Even though none of our staff are parents yet, listening to the mums share parenting stories, experiences, and advice with each other throughout the workshop felt incredibly inspiring. There was such a calm and supportive atmosphere in the studio.

We played relaxing music in the background while babies crawled around on the mats, and Kelly kindly brought cakes for everyone to enjoy together. Many mums also ordered coffee or tea from the studio café, turning the morning into a slow, cozy creative session rather than simply a pottery class.

One comment we heard repeatedly was how difficult it can be to find pottery studios willing to organise events that feel genuinely accessible for parents with babies. That feedback meant a lot to us.

Our staff also tried to support where possible by helping entertain babies during painting moments, giving mums a little more time to relax and focus on creating their pottery pieces. Seeing everyone enjoy themselves, connect with each other, and already ask about future sessions made the experience feel incredibly rewarding for our whole team.

This was a special collaboration workshop rather than a regular public session, but we would absolutely love to explore more events like this in the future.

We’re very grateful to Kelly, Steph, and all the lovely mums who joined us for making the morning feel so special. We already can’t wait to welcome everyone back again soon.
